Ingredients:

  • 6 slices challah bread from Baca Bread at the Venice Farmers Market

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • Maple syrup, for serving

  • Fresh fruit, for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

  2. Dip the challah bread slices in the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides.

  3. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

  4. Add the challah bread slices to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  5. Serve immediately with maple syrup and fresh fruit.

Tips:

  • If you don't have heavy cream, you can use milk, but the French toast will be less rich.

  • To make the French toast ahead of time, you can assemble the dish and then refrigerate it overnight. When you're ready to cook, simply heat the skillet over medium heat and cook the French toast as directed.

  • Challah French toast can be served with a variety of toppings, such as maple syrup, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
